If you want everything Reagan, wall-to-wall Reagan, non-stop Reagan and nothing but Reagan this is the video for you. Unlike the Morris book, this tape features six hours of Reagan being Reagan–in his own words and nobody else’s. His fight against Communism, his gentle wit, his optimism and patriotism shine in this video series. I can’t think of anything that’s not in this series; every great moment of crisis and leadership in the Reagan presidency is covered including vintage clips covering his pre-Presidential years. If you want the whole enchilada then order this video box set. You won’t be disappointed.

This compilation of President Reagan’s speeches is probably the most complete collection I have encountered. It has all the speeches I remember from when I was a boy back in the 1980’s. It brings back great memories of America’s last great president. Most of the speeches presented are shown in most of their entirety. Some of them include SDI, Challenger Disaster, Bombing Libya, Invading Grenada, and Farewell Address to the Nation, to name a few. If you are an admirer of Reagan and suffer from Nostalgia of the Reagan era as I do, this video is for you. Overall, I do recommend this video. It brought back great memories of my childhood with the man I will always call “My President.”

It is so gratifying to finally see a major motion picture made about the WWII Russian Front. After all, it was the Red Army that inflicted 80% of Germany’s total casualties in the war, a fact that many Americans remain sadly ignorant of. It is high time we get past Cold War attitudes and pay tribute to the heroism of the Soviet Union in its bitter but ultimately triumphant struggle against Nazism. _Enemy at the Gates_ is a movie of epic proportions, featuring good overall performances by a solid cast as well as a spectacular cinematic recreation of the bombed-out city of Stalingrad.

Still, the movie tends to drag at times, and could have been much better. The love triangle subplot was more of a distraction than anything else, taking up time that could have been better used to tell more of the awesome story of the battle of Stalingrad as a whole. Rather than simply having the German commander state, “These snipers are demoralizing my people,” it would have been nice to have actually “seen” a little bit more of how the actions of Zaitsev and the Soviet snipers wore down the vaunted German infantry. Regrettably, the duel between Zaitsev and Koenig seemed to be taking place in a separate reality than the war itself, almost giving the impression that both sides had an unwritten agreement to let the two rivals shoot it out without interference. Also, the abrupt ending gave no explanation as to how the Red Army, seemingly on the ropes throughout the movie, suddenly emerged victorious. It would not have taken much film time to explain how this came about: the tenacity of Stalingrads defenders drew the mechanized German forces into costly city fighting, allowing the Red Armys powerful reserves massed to the north and south to punch through the weak Axis flanks and encircle the Germans. Saving Private Ryan succeeded in telling much of the story of the Normandy invasion in a way that neatly complimented the movies plot. I wish that Enemy at the Gates had made more of a similar effort.

I know that dramatic license is a fact of life with historical movies, but it is way overdone in this one. The opening sequence of the Volga crossing is powerful filmmaking and is mostly accurate up until Zaitsev and his fellow soldiers enter the city. The following part about only every other man receiving a weapon and being sent of in a suicide charge is purely the stuff of legend, though, more fitting of the WWI Russian Army or a Soviet punishment battalion. The reality was that the Red Army in Stalingrad fought mostly in small detachments armed with submachine guns rather than rifles, moving stealthily amongst the rubble and ambushing the Germans in brutal house-to-house fighting. This sort of close-quarter combat, where the front lines were often separated by less than 20 yards (or even a mere hallway or staircase), would have played out on screen just as well (better, in fact) as the charge of the Red horde that is the stuff of popular imagination rather than true history. The conclusion of this scene is misleading, as well. The Soviets did shoot many deserters who attempted to flee the front lines, but this degree of harshness did not apply to survivors of a failed attack as shown in the film. The commanders of the Red Army were often brutal towards their men, but not quite that brutal. As for the way the sniper duel is finally brought to a close, with Koenig walking upright in plain view towards what he suspects is the spot where he has just shot Zaitsev dead, it is just ridiculous. Not even a rookie sniper would have made such a fatal error, much less an instructor.

The Soviet characters all share the names of actual people, but none are true to their real-world counterparts. Vassili Zaitsev was more of a natural leader than the movie gives him credit for, not just a shy boy from the Urals reluctantly pushed into the limelight. Danilov, the political officer, appears to have been crafted by the screenwriters almost solely in order to make a faddish intellectual statement about the pitfalls of Communist idealism. The real Danilov was shot (though not fatally) when he foolishly stood up to point out Major Koenigs location to Zaitsev, not in an act of suicide. Tania Chernovas on-screen character was the furthest from reality, though. She was actually a short, temperamental blonde who had previously fought as a partisan in Byelorussia and the Ukraine. A veteran killer by the time she arrived in Stalingrad and possessing a single-minded hatred of the Germans, the real-life Tania could hardly have been more different from the sensitive student/soldier who never actually fires her rifle once throughout the whole film. Also, Chernova was likely Ukrainian, not Jewish (only worth noting because of the widespread myth that most Ukrainians welcomed the Nazis as liberators from Soviet rule). Ironically, the character that seemed truest to reality was Major Koenig, a shadowy figure who some historians claim might never have existed.

Though I used most of the space here to criticize this movie, I guess the fact that I bought the DVD means that I nonetheless enjoyed it. I probably would have rated it better were I not such a Russian history buff. Do yourself a favor and take the time to read both _Enemy at the Gates_, by William Craig (a very readable non-fiction account of the whole Stalingrad campaign) and _War of the Rats_, by David Robbins (a novelized version of the sniper duel that is both a better story and closer to historical fact than this movie was). My main regret is that the films potential was largely squandered to make room for unneeded political rhetoric and melodrama. I only hope that its mediocre performance will not discourage film producers from backing other Russian Front projects in the future.

After many major Hollywood epics about the war on the Western Front (THE LONGEST DAY, PATTON, A BRIDGE TOO FAR, BATTLE OF THE BULGE, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), it is long overdue that ENEMY AT THE GATES, centered on the pivotal battle for Stalingrad, should play to audiences … particularly American audiences.

The core of the plot is the personal duel between two expert snipers, the Red Army’s Vasily Zaitsev (Jude Law) and the German Wehrmacht major, Koenig (Ed Harris), the latter brought into the Stalingrad cauldron to kill the former before he totally destroys the morale of the German troops trying to capture the city. It’s a cat and mouse confrontation depicted with startling realism, though, in this case, the mouse is just as deadly as the cat. The rest of the film is just window dressing, especially the sappy love triangle between Zaitsev, political commissar Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), and a female Red Army sniper, Tania, played by Rachel Weisz.

The film, set among the rubble and destroyed factories of Stalin’s city, is visually stunning. The performances of Law, Harris and Fiennes are excellent, as is that by Bob Hoskins, who plays Joe Stalin’s political representative on the scene, Nikita Krushchev. My complaints center on the accents of the main characters, which don’t sound Russian by any stretch of the imagination, the previously-mentioned and totally superfluous love story, and the fact that the Krushchev is given way too much screen time at the expense of the Russian general, Chuikov, who doesn’t even appear, even though he was the Red Army’s military commander whose gritty defense of the city ultimately prevailed.

This story of the duel between Zaitsev and his German nemesis is based in fact, though a better telling of the tale is the work of book fiction, WAR OF THE RATS, by David Robbins. If you’re interested in this footnote to the Stalingrad struggle, the book is a “must”, and the film will serve as excellent visual reinforcement.

This set fully completes my Gundam Seed anime series set since I’ve already gotten the previous two box sets and the first Gundam Seed Destiny box set which I’m truly happy for since some of Bandai’s recent choices of which sets to release and which to outright cancel(Zegapain being one of them). The series is hard to follow though if you’ve never seen the beginning of the GS universe and the stories of the characters so I’d advise watching the series from the very beginning to understand what is really going on, like most of the Gundam universe series this show seems to mostly stress the utter stupidity and futility of wars. If you look at the various fighting sides you’ll see they all seem to have various and seemingly just reasons for what they are doing and why they are fighting but in the end shows how nothing will change with brute force and that it’s up to the people to willingly decide to change the way things are without the threat or fear of oppression. The characters grow on you and you will weep as some are killed off through the series but that in itself is what makes a great series as you cheer, cry, and feel for the characters as they continue on in the show. The voice cast for both the Japanese and English actors were right on for their roles and kudos to both, the video is clear and sharp and the music is great both heart pacing and fast very addictive as you watch the battle scenes in the series. So I say for any mecha anime or sci-fi anime fan and for the price check out the series you’ll most likely be very entertained, and for fans of the gundam series rejoice as the final set is finally out….

Gundam Seed Destiny, though received much harsh criticism from fans and reviewers alike isn’t bad by any means. If you’ve watched the series from the beginning of Seed your in bound for more of everything good and bad the series has offered and delivered. The continued assaults between Zaft and the Earth forces will reach a satisfying conclusion but the story won’t end there. New mobile suits arrive and change the course of the war. Kira and the Archangel crew will finally take the top stage as the line between right and wrong blur, heroes take the side of the wrong and enemies from before become welcome allies for the end. I won’t spoil the story with detailed explanations though I do give a firm warning that the last episode has somewhat of a let down ending, just as it doesn’t give a lot of closure. The movie Gundam Seed Destiny Final Plus is basically an extended version of the last episode with more action and story and is a much more satisfying ending. Overall if you’ve enjoyed the characters, gundams, battles, and triumphs that Seed has given you so far, you’ll love this box set. If you’ve felt you’ve been dragged along for a boring ride that doesn’t suit your tastes, perhaps the 4 Destiny movies would be better as they give the story without all the extra development and filler. Either way Seed Destiny is definately a true Gundam thrill.

the anime itself is excellent. Big O will always be one of my favorites but my one complaint with this is the packaging when i bought it i assumed with the name The Big O: Anime Legends Complete Collection that it would well be…the complete collection all the episodes just not the first season. If it had been named The Big O: Anime Legends Complete Collection vol 1 then i could have assumed there would be a second vol but with out that i just assumed that it would be the entire series and ended up buying vol 2 a week later after sadly realizing i was wrong

Imagine a crumbling domed Gotham City where everyone has amnesia, and Batman fights evildoers using a giant black mecha.

That’s a fairly basic description of “The Big O,” a strange and action-packed anime with an art deco style, a noir atmosphere and lots of giant robots and strange conspiracies. This is no simplistic action show — there’s a deep central mystery that each episode revolves around, and some deeper meditations on the nature of memory.

Negotiator Roger Smith is hired to get the kidnapped daughter of a client back… only to discover that “Dorothy” is an android, who asks him to protect her. When he starts investigating, Roger learns of her “sister” — vast mecha “Dorothy 1″ — who can only be stopped by his own mecha, the Megadeus called “Big O.” But when Dorothy vanishes during the attack, Roger must find her before a gang of thieves do.

With the help of Dorothy and his faithful butler Norman (and occasionally hardened cop Dastun), Roger uses Big O to deal with a series of increasingly bizarre mysteries. Among his problems: a giant electric eel, a skeletal mecha controlled by the psycho ex-reporter “Schwarzwald,” a billionaire’s missing son, a piano-playing android, a “sea titan” in a flooded city, a mysterious cat with horrifying origins, a Heaven’s Day attack, and a mysterious woman haunting Dastun’s dreams.

Things take a darker turn in the last few episodes, especially since Paradigm City’s strange past becomes the most important part. Roger is hired to give a severance check to Schwarzwald, but becomes enmeshed in his plans for Paradigm City — and witnesses the unveiling of another Megadeus, Big Duo.

And when a series of murders are committed by a red-cloaked figure — who leaves Big O’s motto “Cast In The Name of God, Ye Not Guilty” at each crime — Roger starts to suspect that Dorothy may be involved. And even more confusing, Roger is suffering flashbacks of whatever happened forty years ago… which may be even more ghastly than anyone suspects.

“The Big O” is one of those series that drips with lots of influences — it hasa lovely classic noir feeling, more than a hint of “Batman,” and some tinges of Isaac Asimov (R. Dorothy?). And even the animation has a style reminiscent of art deco, with lots of long clean lines and dark shapes — even the vast Megadeuses and other mecha have them.

But the real beauty of “The Big O” is in the storytelling: the individual plots are reminiscent of a noir detective’s adventures, but with a weird sci-fi twist — a mad journalist in a haunted subway, a mad geneticist, and giant robots that fly and swim. It’s also graced with some explosive slam-bang action, intriguing hi-tech gadgets, and lots of wry humour (Dorothy sets off an elevator’s weight alarm) and dialogue (”Did you say ‘mama’? As in your mother?”).

And running under each episode is the haunting question of what happened to Paradigm forty years ago. The plots drop hints about floating memories and something terrible that turned Paradigm City into a series of half-ruined boroughs. This is especially true in the final episode, which briefly shows the horrifying past.

Dashing playboy Roger Smith is a pretty likable hero — charismatic, charming, a bit lacking in chivalry at times, but ultimately quite heroic and kind. Dorothy’s emotionless attitude makes a nice counterpoint, but she shows some signs of becoming more human (”Even I feel like playing the blues sometimes”). And for the true noir feel, there’s a mysterious femme fatale named Angel who keeps getting Roger into trouble, and the likably efficient butler/cook/technician Norman.

While it appears to be just another mecha anime on the surface, “The Big O” is actually a clever sci-fi/noir series with underlying conspiracies and haunting mysteries.

I almost missed seeing this wonderful little film on the big screen; I caught the last showing of the last day in our local art-house theater. I can’t believe I almost robbed myself of the pleasure of seeing “Bend it Like Beckham”, quite honestly my favorite movie to come out this year so far. It has action, romance, comedy, drama, lots of color and music and in the end a great message about acceptance and following your dreams. What more could you want?

Parminder Nagra stars as Jess, a Londoner of Indian descent who has loved playing soccer (or football, to the rest of the world) all her life. She lives and breathes her sport, so much so that every night she tells all her hopes and dreams to a giant poster of British soccer phenom David Beckham that hangs above her bead. Her parents, though, are less than approving, and when Jess uncovers a female soccer team that is willing to let her play in “real matches” she must weigh fulfilling her dreams against tearing her family apart. There is also the matter of her gorgeous Irish coach (Jonathan Rhys-Myers) and her new best friend (Keira Knightly); two girls and one cute guy can sometimes cause problems.

The script is more deeply layered than you might expect; I especially liked the interaction between Jess and her parents. Jess’ mom is horrified by her daughter’s passion because she feels nice Indian girls should be thinking of marriage and not “running around half naked in front of men”, but her father for a subtler reason; he still remembers when he came to England and was not allowed to play cricket because of his race. He cannot bear the idea of sport breaking Jess’ heart too.

The supporting cast is uniformly great; with standouts being Juliet Stevenson as the mother of Jess’ new friend (”There is a reason Sporty Spice is the only one without a boyfriend!”) and Jonathan Rhys-Myers as the coach. Rhys-Myers, in fact, spends what screen time he has looking incredibly sexy and practically daring the audience to call him on his Irish accent. Everyone else plays their roles to perfection and a good time is had by all, including the audience. Highly recommended!

GRADE: A-

What brilliant film! I absolutely adored it! Anyone who dismisses this film as a “soccer flick” definitely needs to give it a second look. Despite it’s soccer-themed title, “Bend It Like Beckham” is a fabulous and heart-warming story about family, traditions, friendship, love, fulfilling your dreams, and – yes – soccer (or football to non-US audiences).

In the center of the story is Jessminder Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), a young Indian girl living in England who desperately wants to be a football (soccer) player. On the one hand, she is incredibly talented, but on the other, she has very traditional parents who believe that Jess should (a) go to university, (b) become a solicitor, and (c) marry a nice Indian boy. But Jess has dreams of her own and when she is approached by Jules Paxton (Keira Knightley) while playing soccer with the boys at a local park, she secretly joins Jules’ local all-girls “football” team. Jules and Jess become close friends but conflicts arise when both girls fall for the same boy – their coach Joe (the handsome Jonathan Rhys-Meyers).

There are many, many highlights to this film. First of all, it is incredibly entertaining and funny. There are definitely parallels to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” as Jess’ family life is thrown into chaos as they plan for her sister Pinky’s “big fat Indian wedding” (complete with quirky, colorful relatives and friends). Secondly, it has a very talented cast led by newcomer Parminder Nagra (who is wonderful and earnest as the young woman in conflict between her dreams and her family traditions), the beautiful Keira Knightley (who will soon become a household name once “The Pirates of the Caribbean” opens this summer), handsome heartthrob Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (rumored to be in the running to be the next James Bond), the hilarious Juliet Stevenson (as Jules’ prissy mom who is appalled that her daughter would rather play sports than go shopping with her) and Shaheen Khan (as Jess’ no-nonsense mom who is equally appalled that her daughter would rather play sports than learn the finer art of Indian cooking). Thirdly, the production values, script and acting are top-notch, bringing to mind similarly quirky, enjoyable coming-of-age and feel-good films like “Muriel’s Wedding” and “Princess Diaries.”

I honestly cannot find fault with this film. I came into the theater without any pre-conceived expectations and came out loving it and wanting to see it again! This movie is definitely on my DVD must-have list. I can’t wait to own it so that I can watch it again and again. Anglophiles, soccer fans and anyone who enjoys top-notch romantic comedies must see this movie. It is a film that crosses cultural boundaries and will make you smile and laugh from beginning to end. What a gem!

These quotes lit a fire under our curiosity, and it burned for nearly 30 years. Now the excitement and anticipation can be satisfied by…

…the further adventures of little orphan Annie!

CLONE WARS boasts exciting space dogfights and intense light saber duels. But these things do not make up for where it fails miserably. Nowhere in this movie do we see the echoes of the great stories hinted in A NEW HOPE. Nowhere do we see a camaraderie develop between Bail Organa (”years ago you served my father”) and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Since 20th Century Fox did not release this film (can’t say I blame them), the movie opens with the Warner Brothers logo and without the signature Alfred Newman prelude. There is no written prologue that retreats into the distance of space. The animation is rather wooden. This would have been acceptable had the film been made by a studio with a more limited budget. But it was made by George Lucas who has money coming out of his ears! Financially, there is no reason why THE POLAR EXPRESS should look better than CLONE WARS. But even VEGGIE TALES looks better than CLONE WARS.

The plot of CLONE WARS is that the Jedi are summoned to rescue Jabba the Hutt’s kidnapped son. That is the plot of the movie called CLONE WARS. Can someone please enlighten me as to what that has to do with the Clone Wars?

Jabba junior who inherits the nickname,”Stinky” is much more annoying than ewoks and Jar Jar Binks put together. There is even an utterly failed attempt at humor by pointing out that Junior the Hutt made a poopie. (No, I am not making that up.) Which, incidentally, is how we arrive at his cute nickname. Jabba the Hutt’s uncle plays a role in the film as well. Ziro the Hutt does nothing to add to the entertainment value of this heap except to make the viewer wonder whether or not he was based on Truman Capote, for there is an uncanny resemblance.

The music in CLONE WARS almost never sounds like any of the scores composed by John Williams. Sometimes it sounded like a rock band and sometimes like classical Chinese folk music.

I’m sick and tired of people defending ewoks and Jar Jar Binks by saying it’s in there to appeal to the kids. Where have you been the last 30 years? It’s STAR WARS! The name alone has kid-appeal and always has. It has more kid appeal than Fess Parker’s Davy Crockett, for crying out loud. And it had it long before an ewok ever scratched his ear or a Gungan ever ruined a movie. You might as well complain about Sesame Street not having enough kid appeal.

In a word: Stinky.

I’ve been a Star Wars geek since the third grade, and I am now the proud mom of two elementary-aged boys who (like most of their friends, I’m glad to say) also adore the series. Frankly, I sort of wish Lucas had stopped with the three original films which I think are classic and wonderful. The three newer live-action films left a lot to be desired, I felt, but my boys adore them all just as much if not more than the old Luke/Leia/Han movies I grew up with. With the boys it’s all about the action, and The Clone Wars delivers. We saw the preview to this film in the movie theater, and our whole family of four almost jumped out of our seats. How cool! A neat looking cartoon version of the mythical clone wars starring my favorite character, the awesome Obi Wan. Of course, we went out to see it on its opening day (along with some other families with Star Wars boys) and the kids adored everything about it. My view was that it was neat-o, for sure, but clearly not made for adults. Let’s be real, this movie is positioned as the set-up to a new cartoon television series, so it basically seems like a slightly long episode of a tv cartoon. But I like the look of the series with its vivid interplanetary settings and way-cool battle sequences. And being able to see Jedi in action is an overdue pleasure. However, questions are raised which are impossible to answer. I, for one, can not relate to the character of Anakin as a mentor to a youngling since I know that one day he’s going to cold-bloodedly murder a whole temple full of them. My kids even asked me if Anakin is going to kill his padawan one day. Yikes! But if you’ve got kids in the house or a Star Wars collection to add to, you simply have to buy this.

This nature documentary is a 90-minute mini-version of the much longer Planet Earth produced by the BBC. The latter production took five years to make, had a $25 million budget, and employed the latest in photographic technology. The super slow motion and time lapse techniques are especially impressive. Watching the twelve-month transformation of a forest in 30 seconds is spectacular. Earth focuses on three animal “families”–a polar bear and two cubs, a herd of elephants, and then a mother and baby humpback whale that make a 4,000 mile migration. In between these three stories the film intersperses takes from the longer documentary. My only complaint is that this production oversells the product with music that at times is both melodramatic and cutesy, and a corny narration that is clearly intended for young children (”Time for mom and dad to fix breakfast for junior!”). If there is any nature photography that does not need hype, this big screen version is it. Still, like its longer predecessor, Earth makes for fantastic family viewing.

If you’ve seen Planet Earth already, there is no reason at all to watch this. All this movie is is bits and pieces of Planet Earth. It just makes no sense.

El Topo’s surrealism is more slapstick than Jodorwosky’s brilliant follow-up, Holy Mountain, making it more akin to a spaghetti western than a psychedelic journey through the subconscious. The director stars as the gunfighter, El Topo (The Mole), who first gives his 7-year old son (played by real life son, Brontis Jodorowsky) a glimpse of manhood in the form of weaponry, then abandons him for a horseback revenge trip focused on a heartless team of raping, pillaging bandits. Along the way, he meets Mara (Mara Lorenzio), whose tough love encourages him to become a monk. On El Topo’s new qust, he encounters spiritual leaders and endures a series of personal realizations about his past violence. Absurd moments, such as when the viewer first encounters the bandits sniffing and drooling over high-heeled women’s shoes out in the desert, make El Topo satirically wry. Brutal scenes in which rivers of blood run through towns, or people slaughter each other in firing lines, remind the viewer of Mexico’s bloody history. The mixture of ironic humor and violence in El Topo encapsulates Jodorowky’s vision of a world in which reality and the imagination are fused, yet completely separate. This paradox, of great thematic concern in all of Jodorowsky’s films, is most resonant in El Topo when Mara and The Mole sadistically communicate with whips, guns, and knives. As Holy Mountain’s religious message centers wholly around The Alchemist’s transformation of Jesus, El Topo introduces love between man and woman into the symbolic mix, compensating for the divine settings and imaginative characters that elucidate the protagonist’s enlightenment in the later Holy Mountain. Only by viewing the two films as a double feature will one get the full power of Jodorowsky’s Buddhist message, one of self-sacrifice and suffering towards a greater end. –Trinie Dalton
